Easy St. Patty's Day Activity: Works on Cutting and Lacing

I traced a shamrock onto a piece of paper and had the kids cut it out. I took a hole punch and punched holes all around the shamrock. Then I gave each child a green piece of yarn to thread around the shamrock. Fun, easy and a great activity that the kids can work on cutting and lacing!

"Learn Your Colors" St. Patty's Day Activity

To do this activity, you will need:

• paper plates
• each color of the rainbow streamers (or ribbon, or even colored construction paper would work)
• glue
• cotton balls
• stapler

First, cut the paper plate in half. Have your child glue cotton balls all over the paper plate (this is the cloud). Then, cut each of the colored streamers the same length. I had the kids sit in a circle with their  "cloud" and their streamers. I told them that we had to put the rainbows together in order. I would then say - "find your red streamer"...... they would bring up the red streamer with their cloud and I would staple it on there. They would sit back down and I would say - "find your orange streamer", etc. until the rainbow was complete. It was a great craft activity that incorporated the holiday and also helped them work on color recognition!

St. Patty's Day Activity - Work on Colors and Cutting

This was an easy project that the kids loved! What kid doesn't love painting and mixing paints to get new colors. We worked with blue and yellow paint to see what new color we could come up with! I traced a shamrock shape onto white paper and then gave the kids blue and yellow paint to mix and paint the shamrock with. The kids liked looking at the different shades of green that we came up with. The more yellow you use, the lighter the green. The more blue you use, the darker the green. What an easy project to help with cutting skills and learning what colors make new colors.

Easy St. Patty's Day Math Activity to Teach Numbers, Counting and Much More

This is an easy activity to set up for the kiddos to do! It helps with number recognition, counting and even shapes and colors.

I cut out 5 pots of gold from black construction paper. Then I cut out some "gold" from yellow paper. I took some mailing labels that I had and wrote the numbers 1-5 on them. I also used a square hole punch to cut out green "leprechaun" squares. I told the kids that the leprechauns had left us a project they needed up to complete.

The kids glued the "gold" (yellow construction paper) on the top of the black "pots of gold". Each child had 5 pots of gold.

I wrote the numbers 1-5 on these "circle" mailing labels.

The kids glued green squares onto each pot of gold. Since they had 5 pots, one pot had one square, another pot had two squares and so forth up to 5 (it is hard to see the lime green squares on the yellow paper in this picture).

This is a better picture to show them gluing the squares on the pot.

The child then counted the squares on the pot and then had to find that corresponding number on the mailing labels and put it on the pot.

It really was a fun project for the kids and it took some time for them to do. I would love to hear what kind of St. Patty's Day activities you are doing with your kids!

Inside Snow Activity for Kids - Have Fun in the Snow...Inside!

It has been pretty cold here so I am coming up with ideas to try to stay busy inside. The activity we did today was a huge hit so I thought I would share it with ya!

I got out my "Magic Snow Maker":

"Slush Maker"

After it made the "snow", we put it on a cookie sheet and gathered some toys to play in the snow with!

The kids loved this and since we have been reading about snow, cold weather, snowmen, melting snow,etc., this was a great activity to illustrate how fast it can melt when it gets warm!

Shape/Halloween Learning Activity

The other day, we were going over our shapes and I decided that I would draw some different shaped jack-o-lanterns on our big piece of paper. The kids loved this and they had a fun time looking through our "pumpkin patch" (that is what I called the drawing of all the pumpkins) to find the different shaped pumpkins. We read a pumpkin story and then headed to the art table to do our activity (pictured below).

I took an orange piece of paper and make dots in a pumpkin shape around the paper. The kids counted all the dots first.

Then, they took an orange marker and followed it along each dot.

I told them to take their time so they didn't miss any of the dots!

This is what it looked like when they were done.

Then, to add more "shape" review, I had black triangles cut out and a rectangle for the stem (and of course a mouth). They took their shapes and glued them to make their jack-o-lanterns face.

Aren't they cute! And,  it was a great learning activity as well! Love those!

Loads of Fun - Homemade Pom Pom Shooter

I have seen "marshmallow shooters" or "pom pom shooters" on the Internet. I thought the kids would love this activity so we tried our own version today.

The shooters I have seen call for plastic cups, balloons, scissors, pom poms or marshmallows. I didn't have the plastic cups, but I always have a basket full of toilet paper rolls and paper towels rolls for crafting and creativity. So, I thought I would cut the toilet paper rolls in half (this was our "cup"). Then, I tied the bottom of the balloons and cut about 1/2" off the top of the balloons. I also used a rubber band to help hold the balloon in place on the roll.

You just put the cut part of the balloon over one end of the roll and then secure it with a rubber band (make sure the tied end of the balloon is coming out at the end). This picture shows what it looks like all put together. Now the fun begins...... put the pom pom or marshmallow inside the roll and then pull back the tied end of the balloon and let go!!!! Sometimes the tied end of the balloon goes inside the roll, but my daughter found out if you just blow inside the roll, it pops right out! What a cheap activity to make and how much fun they had with this! See how fun recycling can be!!!!

 

"Chalk the Walk" Summer Activity

This was a fun summer activity that kept the kids not only busy, but entertained for a long time!! I had each child pick out a "square" on our driveway (you could also use sidewalk "squares"). I gave them each a package of dollar store sidewalk chalk. I wanted them to design their own concrete square. Our driveway was full of amazing masterpieces!!! I took pictures of each child next to their end product and sent it to their parents. Fun activity!!!

They started out slow, but soon had their entire squares pretty much filled!!!
